The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been the driving force behind the pursuit of a cure for Cystic Fibrosis since 1955, and Delta Phi Epsilon has been contributing to that goal since 1967. Cystic Fibrosis is caused by a defective gene, whose protein product produces a uniquely thick mucus. This leads to serious congestion in the lungs and can cause subsequently fatal lung infections. It also obstructs the pancreas and stops the body’s natural enzymes from breaking down and absorbing food.

There are currently about 30,000 people in the United States and 70,000 people worldwide affected by this disease. Every year, approximately 1,000 new cases are diagnosed. Right now, the predicted median age for survival for those with Cystic Fibrosis is in the mid-30s.

Throughout the year, the Beta Psi chapter holds fundraisers to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In February, we hold a fundraiser called 65 Roses for Cystic Fibrosis, in which we sell chocolate roses for Valentines Day and donate the proceeds to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In the last biennium, DPhiE nationally raised $239,867.00 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
